Beeblebrox.org is my(see bottom of page) website. Zaphod Beeblebrox is a notable character from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy series of books by Douglas Adams. Actually, I don't really like Zaphod's character very much. He is always saying outdated 70's phrases. That always bothered me. I know it was written in the 70's, but come on... He is always saying things like "Zowee, man." Exactly the sort of thing that an ex-President of the Galaxy would never say. The thing about Zaphod is that he has a really great name. So I name lots of things after Zaphod Beeblebrox. My computers have been called 'zaphod' at my last 3 or 4 jobs. I have custom license plates that say Zaphod. (I might really regret that if the movie sucks.) I named my partition table editor 'Beeblebrox' just because I couldn't think of a better name. What would you name a partition table editor? I suppose Steve would have been okay. So while I like Ford and Arthur's characters, especially Ford, their names are just stupid, so naming things after them is out of the question. Hence, I decided to name this website beeblebrox.org because of previous tradition and the fact that it wasn't already registered. (steve.org is taken!) So, anyway I have been a fan of the Hitchhiker's Guide since I first read the book in 6th Grade. Actually, I played the computer game in 4th or 5th grade before I ever even heard of the book. My mom worked at the hospital as a medical technologist and they had some sort of UNIX computers in the lab. The only thing that these particular computers were ever used for, that I know of, was to play Infocom games. (They probably ran mission critical lab applications, but I used them to play computer games.) My mom worked the graveyard shift. She was the only person in the lab all night. She would let me go to the lab with her on weekends and I would play the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy until I couldn't stay awake any longer. It was a long time before I was ever even able to get aboard the Vogon ship. I'd try throwing the towel at the dog and hitting the bartender and all sorts of things that were obviously not going to help. I don't think I ever did beat the game. Click here to play the game right now. (Hint: Start by typing 'turn on light') All of this took place around 1985 or 1986, before most kids had computers other than commodore 64s. I was only about 9 or 10 years old and I thought I was pretty cool. Then, when I was in 6th grade, I realized exactly how cool I wasn't. A kid in my class named Nathan Pendleton who also played HHG told me that it was a book. How could I have not known about this!? So I checked it out from the library and read it and it made me laugh out loud. I read the whole trilogy. (During that period in history a trilogy consisted of three books rather than five as is now the accepted norm.) There were some parts that I didn't understand very well... say, for example, the plot! (still don't, really) I liked it anyway... [4/29/2005] UPDATE: I saw the movie today. It didn't suck. I actually kind of liked it, but my friend who never read any of the books was confused by why there was such and emphasis on towels. Guess he just doesn't really know where his towel's at... |
